Gylfi sets out in disguise as Gangleri to investigate the power of the Aesir, and is brought before the three figures named High, Just-as-High, and Third.

Gylfi konungr var maðr vitr ok fjölkunnigr. Hann undraðisk þat mjök at Ásafólk var svá kunnigt at allir hlutir gengu at vilja þeira. Hann hugsaði hvárt þetta mundi vera af eðli síns eins eða af guðmægi þeira.

King Gylfi was a wise and knowledgeable man. He marveled greatly that the Aesir folk had such skill that all things went according to their will. He pondered whether this arose from their own nature or from divine power granted them.

Hann fór leið sína til Ásgarðs ok fór leynilega ok brá á sik líki gamals manns ok dulðisk svá. En Æsir váru þó vitrari, þvíat þeir höfðu forsjá. Gangleri sá þar hörg mikinn. Þar sá hann mann er kastaði hníflum upp, níu í einu, ok hafði jafnan níu á lofti.

He made his way to Asgard, traveling in secret and disguising himself in the likeness of an old man. Yet the Aesir were still wiser, for they possessed foresight. Gangleri saw there a great hall. Inside he saw a man juggling nine knives, always keeping nine aloft at once.
