Loki is counted among the Aesir but is evil in disposition. His father is Farbauti and his mother Laufey. By the giantess Angrboda he fathered Hel, Fenrir, and Jörmungandr. He is also the mother of Sleipnir, born from the stallion Svadilfari.

Sá er enn talinn með Ásum er sumir kalla rógbera Ásanna ok frumkveða flærðanna ok höfuðlömb goðanna. Hann er nefndr Loki eða Loptr, sonr Fárbauta jötuns. Móðir hans er Laufey eða Nál. Hann er fríðr ok fagr yfirlits, illr í skaplyndi ok mjök bragðvís. Hann er kallaðr Ása-Loki ok skyldleiki við Ása þótt illr sé. Með Angrboðu jötni á hann þrjá börn: Hel, Fenrisúlf ok Jörmungandr.

One counted among the Aesir, whom some call the slanderer of the gods and the originator of deceits, is Loki, also called Loptr, son of the giant Farbauti. His mother is Laufey or Nal. He is fair and attractive in appearance but evil in disposition and very cunning. By the giantess Angrboda he has three children: Hel, Fenrir, and Jörmungandr.

Loki also became the mother of Sleipnir. This occurred when a builder came to Asgard and offered to raise a fortress for them. Loki transformed himself into a mare and ran toward the stallion Svadilfari. From that union Sleipnir was born, the finest of all horses.
