Thor travels to the giant Hymir and rows out to sea with him. He uses an ox-head as bait. Jörmungandr bites at the hook and Thor hauls the serpent up from the sea. They stare at one another. Hymir cuts the line in terror and the serpent sinks back to the depths.
Þórr fór til Hymis jötuns. Þeir reru á haf ok Þórr tók haussinn af uxanum ok gerði sér beitu. Þórr kastaði ór bátinum, ok beit Miðgarðsormrinn á beitu.
Thor traveled to the giant Hymir. They rowed out to sea and Thor took the head of an ox and made it into bait. Thor cast it from the boat, and the Midgard Serpent bit at the bait.
Þórr dró fast upp orminn. Miðgarðsormrinn gapti mjök. Þórr brá upp hendi ok laust til höfuðsins Mjölni. En þá er Hymir sá Miðgarðsorm, þá snaraðist hann ok hjó af þræðinn. Ormrinn sökkvi í sjóinn.
Thor hauled the serpent hard upward. The Midgard Serpent gaped wide. Thor raised his arm and struck at the serpent's head with Mjölnir. But when Hymir saw the Midgard Serpent, he recoiled and cut the line. The serpent sank into the sea.
