Hermóðr rides nine nights on Sleipnir to the gate of the realm of death. He meets Baldr and Nanna in Hel's hall. Hel promises to release Baldr if everything in the world weeps for him. Messengers are sent out and everything weeps except the giantess Þökk, who is Loki in disguise.

Hermóðr reið níu nætr á Sleipni þar til er hann kom til árinnar Gjállar ok reið yfir Gjallarbrú. Hann kom til Heljar ok sá þar Baldri ok Nönnu sitja í hásæti.

Hermóðr rode nine nights on Sleipnir until he reached the river Gjöll and rode across the Gjöll bridge. He came to Hel and there saw Baldr and Nanna seated in the high seat.

Hel sagðist vilja reyna ef svá væri sem sagt yrðri, at allir hlutir grétu Baldri. Sendir váru menn at beiða allt at gráta Baldri. Öll hlutir grét, menn ok dýr, jörð ok steinar ok tré. Þá er sendirnir fóru heim, fundu þeir í helli konu er sat, er nefndist Þökk. Hún neitar at gráta.

Hel said she would put to the test whether it was truly so that all things wept for Baldr. Messengers were sent to ask everything to weep for Baldr. All things wept, men and animals, earth and stones and trees. When the messengers went home, they found in a cave a woman who sat there, called Þökk. She refused to weep.

Eddic quotations

Þökks þula (Gylfaginning 49)

Þökk mun gráta þurrum tárum / Baldrs bálfarar; / kyks né dauðs / nautka ek Baldrs sonar; / haldi Hel því er hefir.

Þökk will weep with dry tears over Baldr's pyre-journey; living or dead I had no use of Baldr's son; let Hel keep what she has.
