Nótt (Night) and her son Dagr (Day) each ride around the sky. Nótt rides Hrímfaxi and Dagr rides Skinfaxi, whose mane lights up the world.
Sá maðr er Narfi eða Nörfi hét bjó í Jötunheimi. Hann átti dóttur er Nótt hét. Hún var svört ok dökk sem henni bar til kyns. Óðinn tók Nótt ok son hennar Dag ok setti þau á himin, ok ríðr Nótt með hest sinn Hrímfaxa um alla veröld hvern dag.
The man called Narfi or Nörfi lived in Jötunheimr. He had a daughter called Nótt. She was black and dark, as befitted her lineage. Odin took Nótt and her son Dagr and placed them in the sky, and Nótt rides her horse Hrímfaxi around the whole world each day.
Dagr sonr hennar ríðr hest þann er Skinfaxi heitir ok lýsir manu ok lopt ok jörð allir af faxi hans, ok er sá hestr bezt metinn af hestum.
Dagr her son rides the horse called Skinfaxi, and the moon, air, and earth are lit up by his mane, and that horse is held to be the best of horses.
